Who We Are
In March 2018, a group of passionate undergraduate students interested in international development decided to relaunch the society on campus. See below for the current Executive Committee 2020/21. See past committees
Moosa Harraj
President
Moosa is a second-year BSc Economics and Economic History student from Pakistan. He is specifically interested in microfinance with the aim of alleviating poverty. Moosa became interested in International Development after he started his own microfinance initiative in a village in rural southern Punjab, Pakistan. As President of InterDev, he’d like to partner with banks and agencies to help mitigate the effects of the pandemic on the less fortunate while also organizing career evenings to widen access to internship opportunities/careers advice. On the social side, Moosa is committed to increasing a sense of community here at LSESU InterDev.
Joaquim Gil
Vice-President
Joaquim is a second-year Economics & Economic History student from Portugal. He is especially interested in transport economics as well as Latin America’s colonial legacy and its consequences on its own development as a continent. Outside of his academic life, Joaquim enjoys traveling and playing tennis.
Rajaa Saleem Sahgal
Secretary
Rajaa is a third-year Politics & International Relations student hailing from Lahore, Pakistan. Her academic interests focus on the post-colonial angle of development and its socio-political impacts on marginalized communities. She is excited to be serving as the Secretary this year and hopes to focus on the interdisciplinary nature of the field. Aside from being a literary enthusiast exploring works ranging from Austen and the Bronte’s to subcontinental resistance literature, in her spare time, she can also be found stress baking, collecting cookbooks, and singing along to nostalgic Bollywood songs.
Shafay Sohail
Treasurer
Shafay is a second-year BSc Geography with Economics student who grew up in Pakistan. He has a deep interest in sustainability and loves to research different ways to include sustainability in the corporate world. He is also passionate about green finance and its role in the sustainable growth of different economies. Shafay is really looking forward to having a diverse range of events at LSE with the amazing InterDev team. In his free time, Shafay loves to swim, read and travel.
Basile Candelon
Head of Events
Basile is a second-year Philosophy, Politics and Philosophy (PPE) student. He was born in France but lived his teenage years in China which increased his interest in emerging economies. Witnessing an alternative system to the Occidental Democracies made Basile want to dig deeper on how international development (political and economic) tries to reconcile such different civilizations. He is excited to be a committee member of InterDev to encourage LSE students to engage with the personalities and institutions that will shape tomorrow’s world. Basile’s goal is to make InterDev the most remarkable society at LSE with members from all horizons.
Neelofar Ahmed
Head of PR & Marketing
Neelofar is a second-year BA Anthropology & Law student from Pakistan. As a student studying both these disciplines, she has explored areas of development within the realm of societal change as well as law/politics and how these affect us. Growing up in Pakistan, she has seen various forms of discrimination faced by individuals and communities who are excluded by society and thus, is particularly interested in human rights and social justice. She is excited by the prospect of working with the InterDev committee, LSE’s community, and beyond to drive positive change.
Zoya Japanwala
Head of Research
Zoya is a second-year BSc Sociology & Economics student. She is particularly interested in exploring the interaction between different aspects and stages of international development. Zoya hopes to deliver on this through the society’s journal, Voices. She is looking forward to working with the research team in putting this journal together!
Aadya Tripathi
Co- Head of Conferences
Aadya is a second-year BSc Economics student who was born in India and has spent half her life in Scotland before moving to London. Aadya is excited to be InterDev’s Co-Head of Conferences this year. Aadya’s interest in international development stems from having witnessed the impact both humanitarian and technological development can have on communities, through her visits to the small Indian town of Bhowali. She firmly believes that education on International Development is crucial in an increasingly globalized world, and more so for students who have the potential to make tangible differences.
Ombeline Lemarchal
Co-Head of Conferences
Ombeline is a third-year BSc International Relations student who grew up in France and Sweden. She is especially interested in the political economy, and the intersection of security and development, which she looks forward to exploring in the Symposium. Our Events
From 25th to 28th February 2020, we hosted the London Development Symposium, a four-day conference. Organised in conjunction with the international development societies of SOAS (University of London) and King’s College London, it was the biggest student-led development conference in Europe.

Get Involved
InterDev is built on transparency and collaboration. There are many ways to get involved in our work, from joining the sub-committee to purchasing membership (Associate and LSESU). We constantly welcome feedback and strongly believe our members should be involved in defining the priorities and direction of the society. Sub-committee positions will open in September 2020.
The Department of International Development (ID) was established in 1990 as the Development Studies Institute (DESTIN) to promote interdisciplinary postgraduate teaching and research on processes of social, political and economic development and change. The LSE ID Department is now ranked one of the world’s top five institutions for development studies. InterDev is built on this strong foundation and collaborates regularly with the ID Department.
